Turmeric continues to be one of the fastest-growing botanical ingredients in the nutraceutical industry, driven by consumer interest in healthy aging, mobility, exercise recovery, and overall wellness. However, as demand has increased, so has concern around ingredient authenticity.
A newly published scoping review from the Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program (BAPP) provides one of the most comprehensive assessments of turmeric adulteration to date, highlighting the importance of selecting trusted ingredient suppliers and robust quality systems.
One in Five Commercial Turmeric Products Were Found to Be Adulterated
Conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines, the review analyzed turmeric adulteration studies from Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science.
Researchers evaluated 48 scientific publications assessing the identity and authenticity of commercial turmeric ingredients and products, including whole and powdered turmeric, non-standardized extracts, curcumin-standardized extracts, and dietary supplements.
Across 2,235 commercial samples, researchers found:
- 448 products were adulterated
- An overall adulteration rate of 20.0%
- A 22.0% adulteration rate among turmeric dietary supplements
- A 20.4% adulteration rate among turmeric sold as a spice
The review also found that while turmeric spice is commonly adulterated with artificial dyes, starches, and undeclared plant materials, dietary supplements are more frequently adulterated with synthetic curcumin or excessive diluents.
Why This Matters for Supplement Brands
As consumers increasingly seek clinically supported botanical ingredients, authenticity has become just as important as potency.
An ingredient may meet a curcuminoid specification, but if synthetic curcumin or other undeclared materials have been introduced during manufacturing, the product no longer represents the natural turmeric extract consumers and brands expect.
For manufacturers, this makes supplier selection critical. Strong quality systems, transparent sourcing, and comprehensive authentication testing can help ensure ingredient integrity from raw material through finished extract.
How curQ+® Delivers Confidence
At Stratum Nutrition, quality begins long before an ingredient reaches production.
curQ+® is manufactured through a carefully controlled process designed to preserve the natural integrity of turmeric while minimizing the risk of adulteration. Comprehensive quality testing helps verify identity, purity, and authenticity, giving brands confidence that they are receiving a genuine turmeric-derived ingredient.
- This commitment to quality is supported by:
- Carefully selected and qualified raw materials
- Robust quality control throughout manufacturing
- Comprehensive analytical testing to verify ingredient authenticity
- Consistent batch-to-batch quality and performance
An important part of this approach is verifying not only how much curcumin is present, but also where that curcumin comes from.
How Carbon-14 Testing Helps Verify Natural Curcumin
The Curcumin 95 used in curQ+® undergoes Carbon-14 testing to help verify that the curcumin is derived from a natural botanical source rather than being replaced or supplemented with synthetic, petrochemical-derived curcumin.
The science behind the testing is relatively straightforward. Plants absorb a naturally occurring radioactive isotope of carbon, known as Carbon-14 (C-14), while they are growing. As a result, curcumin extracted from recently living turmeric plants carries a measurable modern carbon signature.
Petroleum-derived materials, by contrast, are millions of years old. Over that time, their measurable Carbon-14 has decayed away. Synthetic curcumin produced from these fossil-based materials therefore does not carry the same modern carbon signature as naturally sourced turmeric.
By analyzing this carbon signature, laboratories can help answer an important question: Did the curcumin originate from a recently living botanical source, or from fossil-based chemical materials?
This distinction adds another layer of assurance beyond traditional potency testing. A standard potency test can determine how much curcumin is present, but that measurement alone may not establish its botanical origin. Carbon-14 testing helps provide additional evidence of where the curcumin came from.
In other words, it is about verifying both amount and source. Potency testing helps confirm the expected concentration of curcumin, while Carbon-14 testing helps verify that the curcumin carries the natural, plant-derived origin expected by brands and consumers.
For curQ+®, this additional level of authentication reinforces Stratum Nutrition’s commitment to transparency and ingredient integrity, helping brands formulate with greater confidence.
Setting a Higher Standard for Turmeric Quality
The BAPP review reinforces an important industry takeaway: as turmeric demand continues to grow, ingredient authentication is becoming increasingly essential.
With approximately one out of every five commercial turmeric products found to be adulterated, manufacturers have an opportunity to differentiate their products by choosing suppliers that prioritize transparency, quality, and authenticity.
For botanical ingredients, meeting a potency specification is only part of the equation. Understanding and verifying the source behind that potency is becoming increasingly important as manufacturers work to protect product integrity and consumer trust.
As demand for trusted, science-backed botanical ingredients continues to grow, authenticity will remain a defining factor for successful products. At Stratum Nutrition, we're committed to delivering ingredients that meet rigorous standards for quality and integrity. Through comprehensive quality controls, including Carbon-14 authentication of the Curcumin 95 used in curQ+®, brands can formulate with greater confidence in the authenticity and botanical origin of their turmeric ingredient.
